White Palace Resort – A Royal Stay in the Heart of Swat
The White Palace Resort, also known as Sufaid Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and historic places to visit in Swat Valley, Pakistan. This 35-foot-tall building was once called the Swati Taj Mahal. It was built in 1940 by Miangul Abdul Wadud (Badshah Sahib), the first ruler of Swat. The palace was made from shining white marble, which gives it a royal and peaceful look.
Today, this palace has become a popular tourist resort surrounded by green hills and fresh air. It is not only a place to stay but also a piece of Swat’s royal history.
Location of White Palace Resort
The White Palace Resort is located on Marghazar Hill, about 13 kilometers south of Saidu Sharif, at an elevation of 7,136 feet. The area around the resort is full of natural beauty. A famous Hindu saint, Ram Chandra Jee Maharajah, once meditated in this region for three years, making the place even more spiritual and peaceful.
History of White Palace Resort
In 1935, the then-king Miangul Abdul Wadud visited this area and was amazed by its beauty. He decided to build his summer home here. Turkish builders designed the palace, and it was completed in 1941. The king brought marble from Agra and copper from Belgium to make this palace.
Over the years, the palace was known by different names — Swati Taj Mahal, Motti Mahal, and now Sufaid Mahal (White Palace). Later, it was turned into a resort for visitors.
The palace also has a special connection to royalty — Queen Elizabeth II of England stayed here during her visit to Swat in 1961.
Structure and Design
The palace has 24 spacious rooms, each decorated in a simple but elegant way. Two main halls were once used for royal meetings. The king’s lobby opens to a lush green garden with a relaxing view.
A twelve-room Queen’s block can be reached by climbing a few stairs. In front of the palace, there is a marble seating area with beautiful carvings. Each corner of the building shows fine craftsmanship and royal taste.

The resort offers more than just a stay — it’s a peaceful and fun place for both families and solo travelers.

My Experience at White Palace Resort
The Royal Suite is my favorite part of the resort. It was once the private room of the Swat ruler and later hosted Queen Elizabeth II. The old furniture, fans, lights, and telephones from the 1940s give it a classic charm. From the balcony, the view of the garden and the nearby mountains is truly amazing.
The management takes good care of this heritage site, keeping its original look and royal feel.
