Geography of Trango Tower
The tallest formation in the Trango Valley is Great Trango, located in the Baltoro Glacier region of northern Pakistan. It boasts nearly 4,400 vertical feet of granite, making it the largest vertical rock face in the world. Rising above 20,000 feet (6,286 meters), Great Trango dominates the skyline as trekkers approach the bigger mountains of K2, Gasherbrum IV, Broad Peak, and Nanga Parbat.

Location of Trango Tower
The Trango Tower lies deep within the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan, north of the Baltoro Glacier in the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Standing at 6,286 meters (20,608 feet), it’s part of one of the world’s most spectacular mountain landscapes. The vertical cliffs and sharp ridges here have made it one of the toughest rock climbing destinations anywhere on the planet.
Route to Trango Tower
While journeying toward the Trango region, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of Nanga Parbat, K2, and other Himalayan and Karakoram giants. Most expeditions start from Skardu, the capital of Baltistan, which serves as the gateway to major peaks like K2, Mashabrum, Deosai Plateau, and of course, Trango Tower. Climbers usually spend a day or two in Skardu, preparing for the long journey ahead and arranging their remaining supplies.
Between the Trango Glacier on the west and the Dunge Glacier on the east lies a dramatic ridge that runs northwest to southeast, where all the Trango Towers are positioned. Great Trango is a vast massif with four summits — Main (6,286 m), South/Southwest (~6,250 m), East (6,231 m), and West (6,223 m). These peaks consist of steep snow gullies, overhanging rock walls, and sharp ridge systems, creating one of the most complex mountain formations in the Karakoram.
The east face of Great Trango Tower is known for having the world’s largest near-vertical drop, making it a once-in-a-lifetime challenge for professional climbers.
The Nameless Tower
The Nameless Tower, commonly known as Trango Tower, rises just northwest of Great Trango. It stands like a massive, symmetrical spire, piercing the sky more than 1,000 meters above its surrounding ridges. Just to its north lies a smaller spire known as the Trango Monk, followed by Trango II (6,327 m) and Trango Ri (6,363 m) — the highest point on the ridge.
To the southeast of Great Trango is the Trango Pulpit (6,050 m), part of the same massif, presenting climbing challenges as serious as those of Great Trango itself. Further south, near the Baltoro Glacier, lies Trango Castle (5,753 m) — another striking summit that completes this remarkable collection of granite towers.
What to Do at Trango Tower
Reaching Trango Tower Base Camp is a journey filled with breathtaking scenery. When the trail splits near the snout of Baltoro Glacier, climbers take the left fork toward the base camp. Along the way, one can witness incredible views of Paiyu Peak (6,660 m), Uli Biaho Tower (6,417 m), Urdukas Peak, Gasherbrum IV (7,925 m), and Mitre Peak (6,025 m).
This entire area feels like a natural amphitheater surrounded by towering peaks. After several days of trekking, climbers finally reach the base camp, where they spend time acclimatizing to altitude and preparing for the main ascent. Best Time to Visit Trango Tower
The best time to visit and climb Trango Tower is between June and September, when the weather is relatively stable. During this period, the granite walls are dry, and conditions are most suitable for climbing.
American climber Josh Wharton, who pioneered the southwest ridge of Great Trango with Kelly Cordes, described the rock as being “like Yosemite, but with a touch of wilderness.” Their 2004 ascent of the Azeem Ridge (VII 5.11X M6 A2) involved a 50-mile approach trek and over 7,400 vertical feet of climbing — a powerful testament to the difficulty and beauty of this mountain.
History of Trango Tower
The Trango Towers have witnessed some of the most daring and difficult ascents in mountaineering history. Due to the extreme elevation, verticality, and technical routes, every climb here is a serious undertaking.
The first successful ascent of Great Trango Tower was achieved in 1977 by Galen Rowell, John Roskelley, Kim Schmitz, Jim Morrissey, and Dennis Hennek. Their route began from the Trango Glacier (west side) and climbed a series of ice ramps and rock faces before reaching the summit. This marked a historic milestone, inspiring countless climbers to test themselves against the same walls in the years that followed.
