Attabad Lake Hunza
Attabad Lake is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Hunza. It is located in the Gojal region, about half an hour’s drive from Karimabad, the main town of Hunza district in Gilgit-Baltistan. The lake was created in 2010 after a huge landslide blocked the flow of the Hunza River in the Attabad area. What began as a natural disaster turned into one of the most stunning spots in the region.
How Attabad Lake Was Formed
In January 2010, a massive landslide struck the Attabad area. The landslide blocked the Hunza River for about five months, creating a natural dam. As the water level rose, a new lake slowly formed. The depth of Attabad Lake reached over 300 feet, and it stretched for about 13 miles in length.
Sadly, the disaster took 20 lives and displaced more than 6,000 people. It also destroyed around 170 houses and 120 shops in nearby villages, including Ainabad, Shishkat, and Gulmit. The blockage even cut off the Karakoram Highway, which caused food shortages in the upper valley.
Today, however, the lake stands as a reminder of both nature’s power and its beauty. It has become one of the most visited places in Gilgit-Baltistan, drawing thousands of tourists each year.
Activities at Attabad Lake
Visitors can enjoy many activities at Attabad Lake such as boating, fishing, and jet skiing. The lake’s deep blue water and the surrounding peaks of the Karakoram Mountains make it a perfect place for photography and relaxation.
During summer, the cool blue water is refreshing, and people come here to escape the heat. In winter, the lake often freezes, creating a different kind of beauty, but the best time to visit is between May and September, when the weather is pleasant and the lake is ice-free.
The distance from Islamabad to Attabad Lake is about 599 kilometers. By air, you can reach Gilgit in around 55 minutes, and then continue to Hunza by road. If you travel entirely by road, the journey takes around 10 to 11 hours.
