The Route – From Islamabad to K2
The adventure begins in Islamabad, with a scenic 45-minute flight to Skardu, offering spectacular aerial views of lush valleys and mighty peaks. From Skardu, the journey continues by road through the dramatic Braldu Gorge and along the Indus River, reaching the remote village of Askole (3,000 m) — the gateway to the trek.
From Askole, trekkers begin their ascent along the Baltoro Glacier, passing through incredible landscapes and iconic peaks like Lob Sang Spire, Trango Towers, and the Cathedral Group.
As you move towards Concordia, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Here, trekkers stand surrounded by four peaks over 8,000 meters high — a sight found nowhere else on earth.
Continuing up the Godwin Austen Glacier, the trek reaches Broad Peak Base Camp, K2 Base Camp, and the Gilkey Memorial, honoring climbers who have perished on K2’s slopes.
The next major stop is Ali Camp, where trekkers rest before crossing the challenging Gondogoro La Pass (5,585 m). With ropes, crampons, and guides, the climb is steep but safe — and at the summit, you are rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the entire Karakoram range. Peaks like K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I (Hidden Peak), and Gasherbrum II appear so close it feels like you could touch them.
Descending from the pass, the trail leads through lush alpine meadows into the Hushe Valley, a peaceful Balti settlement where friendly locals welcome trekkers with smiles and warmth. From here, jeeps take visitors back to Skardu, marking the end of a journey that stays etched in memory forever.
Duration and Difficulty
The K2 and Gondogoro La Trek typically takes around 20 to 22 days to complete. It requires good physical fitness and some prior trekking experience at high altitudes. Mountaineering gear such as harnesses, helmets, and ice axes are essential for safely crossing the pass.
Best Time to Visit Gondogoro La
The best months for the Gondogoro La Trek are from June to August, when the weather is most stable and the routes are open. During summer, the glaciers are relatively safe to traverse, and the visibility of peaks is at its best.
Although most trekkers prefer summer, experienced mountaineers also visit in late spring or early autumn for quieter trails and clearer skies.
Culture, Food, and Local Experience
Besides the mountain views, the trek offers a deep look into the life of Northern Pakistan. The Balti culture adds color and warmth to the journey. Visitors can taste traditional dishes like chapshuro, local bread, and freshly caught trout fish, often served beside glacial streams.
The trek is not just about climbing — it’s a cultural exchange, a connection with nature, and an unforgettable story of human endurance amid the world’s most spectacular mountains.
