Location and Height of Domel Valley
Domel is a small village situated at an elevation of 3,789 meters (12,385 feet) above sea level. It is located close to Khusto Baihk and Gujar Baihk in South Asia. The valley lies near the Line of Control (LOC) in the Minimarg region of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan.
In the past, Minimarg was part of an old trade route that connected Srinagar and Gilgit before 1948, when Pakistan and India began to fight for control of this area.
Rainbow Lake Domel
One of the main attractions of Domel Valley is Rainbow Lake. It is a small but incredibly beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and green meadows. The lake is fed by fresh water streams that come from the nearby hills. Its clear water changes color throughout the day — sometimes blue, sometimes green — which makes it even more beautiful to watch.
Rainbow Lake is popular among tourists and especially loved by trout fishing lovers. The lake is known for its brown trout, and many visitors enjoy fishing here. The area around the lake is covered with soft green grass and colorful flowers, making it an ideal spot for photography, camping, and relaxing by the water.
The peaceful surroundings and quiet evenings near Rainbow Lake make it a perfect place to enjoy nature at its best. Spending a night camping beside the lake feels like living in a dream.
Rainbow Lake Minimarg
Rainbow Lake is located in Minimarg, a valley in the Astore District. It is one of the most beautiful but also one of the hardest-to-reach lakes in Pakistan. To reach Rainbow Lake, travelers have to cross the Burzil Pass, which is about 14,500 feet high.
The Burzil Pass remains closed for about 7–8 months every year due to heavy snowfall, which makes planning very important before visiting. The best time to visit Domel Valley and Rainbow Lake is from June to August, when the weather is pleasant and the routes are open.
How to Reach Domel and Minimarg
Minimarg can be reached through Astore-Kargil Road or Deosai National Park from Skardu. The two routes meet at Chillum Chowki. From there, one road goes toward Deosai Plains, while the other leads to Minimarg via Burzil Top.
The total distance from Islamabad to Domel Valley is about 258 kilometers (161 miles). While traveling, visitors can enjoy stunning views of pine-covered hills, flowing rivers, and winding mountain roads. However, because the terrain is rough, it is best to travel in a 4×4 vehicle and hire a local guide if visiting for the first time.
